If so, you are likely to encounter asbestos in your day-to-day work. It’s important you know how to protect yourself and others from the hazards of this once popular building material
If you are working on a building built before the late 1980s, then be careful. It probably contains asbestos materials.
With over 3000 asbestos containing materials produced prior its ban in Australia, use the Asbestos Finder to find out what products might contain asbestos and where they are commonly located in homes and buildings.
The law prevents you removing asbestos in most cases, unless you are a licensed asbestos removalist. But it also gives you rights to be informed of asbestos when you are working in commercial buildings.
Make sure you review the fact sheets below and know your rights and responsibilities.
SafeWork NSW also has information available on dealing with asbestos in the workplace including safety videos like the danger of using high pressure hoses on asbestos containing materials.
